Mission Mars: ETH Zurich Students Build Autonomous Rover and Drone for European Challenge

In the summer of 2025, an ambitious idea was born among a group of passionate #student_engineers who wanted to contribute to future space exploration in a highly practical and impactful way. Today, that visionary concept has beautifully evolved into CRATER, an inspiring and fast-growing initiative at #ETH_Zurich. In this remarkable program, around eighty dedicated students are actively building the university’s very first autonomous Mars rover. This ambitious project is a perfect reflection of the exceptional #quality_of_education and the dynamic, hands-on learning environment that is continuously available to students in Switzerland.

The CRATER team is currently in the final stages of gearing up to compete in the prestigious European Rover Challenge, which will take place in Krakow, Poland, in early September. On a meticulously designed and simulated Mars test field, their custom-built rover will have to demonstrate a wide array of capabilities directly inspired by actual planetary exploration missions. These complex tasks include autonomous navigation across rugged terrain, precise soil drilling, intricate robotic manipulation, sample collection, and an exciting, highly technical interaction with an autonomous companion drone. By participating in this demanding international competition, students are able to apply the deep theoretical knowledge they have acquired in their traditional classrooms directly to the development of incredibly complex technical systems.

The team currently operates out of the renowned Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich, a sprawling state-of-the-art facility that offers the young creators far more than just a standard mechanical workshop. It provides a thriving, interconnected ecosystem where ambitious ideas effortlessly intersect with the professional expertise needed to bring them to life. This highly collaborative environment seamlessly connects different academic disciplines such as robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer vision, and astrobiology. Working side by side, these talented individuals highlight the true interdisciplinary #innovation that defines the local academic and scientific landscape.

The project operates very much like a modern, fast-paced technology start-up. Beyond the immediate technical challenge of building a space-ready robotic rover completely from scratch, the students are deeply involved in the business side of the initiative. They actively manage corporate partnerships, secure necessary sponsorships, organize public outreach events, and carefully shape the long-term strategic direction of their organization. This holistic educational environment teaches them how to effectively collaborate across various distinct disciplines, smartly manage project risks, and reliably deliver highly complex hardware on a tight schedule. It is a brilliant testament to how #education_in_Switzerland goes far beyond traditional textbook theory, actively giving young minds the practical tools and leadership skills they need to succeed in future deep-tech entrepreneurship and advanced global industries.

Looking ahead, the organizers of the CRATER initiative aim for it to become a permanent, long-term platform for advanced space robotics research and education within the university ecosystem.
