volunteer-led public education initiative known as the “Autonomous School Zurich” continues to grow, offering open-access cultural and language classes to immigrants, socially marginalized groups, and the broader community. Highlights include:

  • Weekly programming features a wide range of courses—from language classes and civic forums to cultural workshops and community meals—conducted across several community spaces.

  • All activities are free, rely on volunteer educators, and are run entirely by local participants.

  • Since its founding in 2009, the school has become a vibrant grassroots hub, currently hosting over 500 participants weekly and staffed by more than 100 volunteers

This inclusive model has been praised for fostering social integration and grassroots cultural exchange, demonstrating how bottom-up educational practices can enhance lifelong learning and community cohesion in urban settings.
